Illustration : Lewis Carroll's The Crocodile

I made this painting to illustrate the Lewis Carroll poem "The Crocodile" from 'Alice and Wonderland'. When painting the scales, I discovered a method of painting on a thin layer of paint & water and blotting the shape with paper towels. I enjoy layering tints and shadows instead of one thick layer. (2012)

The Crocodile

How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!
